Latent structure of learning goals and strategies

AB  - A review of the relevant literature demonstrates disagreement regarding the number and nature of factors that affect learning goals and strategies, as well as whether the goals and strategies may be treated as separate groups of phenomena. In order to clarify this controversy, a sample of 364 Belgrade University students was given an instrument consisting of 94 indicators taken from a larger number of available instruments that measure approaches to learning, goal orientations and learning strategies. Factor analysis, applied on the obtained data, showed that six first-order factors related to learning goals and seven first-order factors related to learning strategies explain the latent structure of the phenomenon. Then, second order factor analysis was applied on the pool of obtained factor scores. The assumption that learning goals and strategies share a similar latent structure was confirmed. The results show that a large number of these factors can be predominantly reduced to three latent dimensions: deep approach, surface approach, and achievement approach. The paper suggests that precise operationalisation of the achievement approach is required in the future research.

Contribution of various factors in establishing connections between the pupils' habits, learning techniques and their school achievement

AB  - The aim of the research was to establish the connection between the pupils' learning habits and techniques and their school achievement. 399 pupils (207 boys and 192 girls) attending 8th grade of Belgrade primary schools were tested by instruments prepared especially for the research: Inventory of Learning Habits and Techniques and Biology and Mathematics Knowledge Tests measuring reproduction, comprehension and usage of the acquired knowledge. The analysis included data on pupils' general intellectual capabilities, sex, school accomplishment and their parents' occupation. Canonic covariance analysis showed relatively strong connection between the tested groups of variables obtained by two pairs of quasicanonic factors, one global factor (Competence - General School Achievement Factor) and one specific factor (Attitudes toward Biology - Accomplishment in Biology). On the basis of the obtained results it can be concluded that the attitudes toward the tested educational subjects and the general intellectual capability are of principal significance for school achievement. They are followed by the independence in learning and the feeling of competence for learning and then by positive attitude toward school, regular attendance to and the attention at the classes.
AB  - Istraživanje je sprovedeno sa ciljem da se utvrde veze navika i tehnika učenja sa školskim postignućem učenika. Instrumentima sastavljenim posebno za potrebe ovog istraživanja - Inventarom navika i tehnika učenja i testovima znanja iz biologije i matematike, koji mere reprodukciju, razumevanje i primenu stečenih znanja U ispitano je 399 učenika (207 dečaka i 192 devojčice) VIII razreda beogradskih osnovnih škola. U analizu su uključeni i podaci o opštim intelektualnim sposobnostima, polu i školskom uspehu učenika, kao i zanimanju roditelja. Kanonička analiza kovarijanse pokazala je da postoje relativno jake veze između ispitivanih skupova varijabli, koje se ostvaruju putem dva para kvazikanoničkih faktora, jednog globalnog (Kompetentnost U Faktor generalnog školskog postignuća); i jednog specifičnog (Stavovi prema biologiji - Uspeh u biologiji). Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata zaključeno je da su stavovi prema ispitivanim nastavnim predmetima i opšte intelektualne sposobnosti od primarnog značaja za školsko postignuće. Slede samostalnost u učenju i osećanje kompetentnosti za učenje, a zatim pozitivan odnos prema školi i praćenje nastave.

AB  - Effects of parental treatments on girls' value orientations were examined in this paper. The sample consisted of 145 girls, 16 to 17 years old. PCR scale (Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire: Roe & Siegelman, 1963) was used to explore parental treatments while value orientations were investigated by list of 13 value goals. Data were analyzed under the model of quasicanonical correlation. Research findings indicate significant relations between parental treatments and girls' values, which is in accordance with finding from previous research. Correlations between these variables for female sample are lower than for male sample, and mechanism underlying these relations are different. Relations between parental treatments and girls' values indicate that dominant mechanisms in development of values are negative identification. It seems that girls tend to develop system of values that is, almost, opposite to the parental system of values.
AB  - U radu se razmatraju efekti vaspitnih postupaka roditelja na vrednosne orijentacije devojaka. Uzorak predstavljaju devojke (145) drugog razreda iz dve beogradske gimnazije. Za ispitivanje vaspitnih postupaka roditelja korišćena je PCR skala (The Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire: Roe & Siegelman, 1963), dok su vrednosne orijentacije operacionalizovane pomoću liste od 13 ciljeva. Podaci su analizovani pod modelom kvazikanoničke korelacione analize. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da postoje značajne veze između vaspitnih postupaka roditelja i vrednosnih orijentacija devojaka, što je u skladu sa rezultatima ranijih istraživanja. Veze između ovih varijabli na uzorku devojaka su nešto slabije nego kod mladića, a mehanizmi koji stoje u osnovi tih veza su nešto drugačiji. Postoji veća specijalizacija roditeljskih uloga prema ženskom nego prema muškom detetu. Veze između vaspitnih postupaka roditelja i vrednosnih orijentacija devojaka ukazuju da je dominantan mehanizam usvajanja vrednosti - mehanizam negativne identifikacije. Čini se da devojke teže da usvoje sistem vrednosti koji je gotovo suprotan roditeljskom.

The role of family in development of boys' values

AB  - The aim of this empirical study was to explore effects of parental treatments (retrospective reporting) on value orientations of boys, using multivariate method   (quasi canonical correlation's). The main problems of the research were: (1) to test the relations between parental treatments and value orientations of boys; (2) to investigate psychological mechanisms underlying potential relations between two sets of variables. The sample consisted of 67 boys, 16 to 17 years old. PCR scale (The Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire: Roe & Siegelman, 1963) was used to examine parental treatments. The list of 13 values was made after preliminary research. Research findings confirm significant relations among variables of parental treatments and value orientations of boys. We can assume that parental treatments are mediators between parental and boys' system of values. Also, we can assume that the main mechanism  underlying relations between two sets of variables is modeling.
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se, koristeći multivarijantni pristup, (kvazikanonička korelacija) utvrdi odnos između vaspitnih postupaka roditelja (retrospektivno izveštavanje) i vrednosnih orijentacija mladića. Glavni istraživački problemi bili su: 1) ispitati odnose između vaspitnih postupaka roditelja i vrednosnih orijentacija mladića; 2) utvrditi koliko mehanizma stoji u osnovi potencijalnih veza i koji su to mehanizmi. Uzorak se sastojao od 67 mladića između 16 i 17 godina starosti iz dve beogradske gimnazije. Za ispitivanje vaspitnih postupaka roditelja korišćena je PCR skala (The Parent-Child Relations Questionnaire: Roe & Siegelman, 1963). Lista od 13 vrednosti načinjena je nakon preliminarnog istraživanja. Za ispitivanje odnosa među varijablama korišćen je metod kvazikanoničke korelacije. Istraživački rezultati ukazuju na značajne veze između varijabli vaspitnih postupaka roditelja i vrednosnih orijentacija mladića. Način na koji roditelji pokušavaju da utiču na dečje ponašanje najverovatnije proističe iz vrednosnih orijentacija roditelja. Može se pretpostaviti da roditeljski postupci predstavljaju sponu između roditeljskog i dečjeg sistema vrednosti. Takođe, možemo pretpostaviti da se iza ovakvog odnosa varijabli krije mehanizam učenja po modelu.
