Abstract
The report brings the results of the analysis of verbal communication between teachers and pupils on the sample of 20 classes of the first grades of elementary school in Belgrade. A modified Flanders system of categories for analyzing verbal communication was applied, based, on the systematic observation of the teaching during the class. Since each teacher was observed through four school periods, which is a minimum time to be possible to determine a prevailing style of behavior, the observations included 80 school periods. The analysis of the structure and the quality of verbal communication at the beginning stage of class instruction has shown that the authority of the teacher is less expressed openly, as is the case with older ages, but more indirectly, by means of questions that direct the activity and the behavior of pupils. It has also been established that the nature of the subject has a significant influence upon the application of some models of communication from the part of ...the teacher. The result of the research has also proved the hypothesis on the favorable influence of non- directive style of teacher's behavior during the class upon the pupils' initiative in communication as well as upon the. discipline in the class, compared to the directive style of behavior.
