The role of encouragement in primary schools

Podsticanje kao vaspitna mera u osnovnoj školi

Abstract
Encouragement can be applied in several important segments: creation of a positive social and emotional atmosphere, creation of a positive learning environment, use of preventive techniques in some discipline-related situations, type of intervention when dealing with behavioral problems of students and in the strategy of strengthening students self-confidence. The paper deals with the frequency and manners in which encouragement is used. One of the primary segments in which encouragement is exercised is teacher-student relation, where both verbal and non-verbal encouragement approval, praise, reward and example have large rational and emotional significance. The research comprises the results of systematic observation of individual encouragement tools with their characteristics and functions in primary school teaching practice. The research has been conducted in three primary schools in Belgrade. The quantitative indicators show the reduced frequency of encouragement with the growing a...ge of students. The collected results reveal that in relation to the tested variables the teacher’s personality plays an important role. This suggests the need for teachers to be instructed on the possibilities and conditions for the use of encouragement with primary school children.

Sistem mera podsticanja moguće je primenjivati u nekoliko značajnih segmenata vaspitno-obrazovnog procesa u školi: kreiranje pozitivne socioemocionalne klime, stvaranje pozitivnih uslova za učenje, korišćenje preventivnih tehnika u određenim vaspitnim situacijama, rešavanje problema u ponašanju učenika, podsticanje samopouzdanja učenika. Ovaj rad odnosi se na istraživanje učestalosti i načina primene podsticanja kao vaspitne mere u osnovnoj školi. Jedan od primarnih okvira u realizovanju primene podsticanja u vaspitanju jeste odnos nastavnika i učenika, gde verbalni i neverbalni podsticaj, ohrabrenje, pohvala, nagrada i primer imaju važan racionalni i emocionalni značaj. Ovo istraživanje obuhvata rezultate sistematskog posmatranja korišćenja podsticajnih sredstava, sa pokazateljima njihovih karakteristika i funkcija u nastavnoj praksi osnovne škole. Istraživanje je realizovano u tri osnovne škole na području Beograda na uzorku učenika V i VII razreda i nastavnika predmetne nastave. Na ...osnovu kvantitativnih pokazatelja uočena je tendencija smanjenja učestalosti mera podsticanja sa povećanjem uzrasta učenika. Dobijeni rezultati pokazuju da u vezi sa ispitivanim varijablama bitnu ulogu ima ponašanje nastavnika. To sugeriše potrebu da se nastavnicima ukaže na mogućnosti i uslove primene podsticajnih sredstava u vaspitanju dece osnovnoškolskog uzrasta.
