In The Social Acceptance of Pupils with Developmental Disabilities in the Lower
Grades of Primary School, author Rajka Đević compares the social acceptance of pupils
with developmental disabilities and their peers who do not have such disabilities. In
order to research social acceptance, the level of pupils’ social acceptance, their social
status, and the formation of friendships were studied. The research was realised be
means of sociometric research techniques with the use of a sociometric questionnaire
and rating scale. The results of the presented research point out the lower level of social
acceptance of pupils with developmental disabilities, their unfavourable social status
in class as well as the fact that they have fewer friendships than their peers without
such disabilities. The implementation of different programs focused on fostering
tolerance among all the participants in school work and life, respecting differences, and
promoting the social competence of both p...upils who have developmental disabilities
and their peers could contribute to a better picture of the social acceptance of pupils
with disabilities in regular primary schools.
