The paper sets out from the relationship between education and catechesis. This relationship
is manifold and Christiancommunity has always recognized it. However, it has been
interpreted differently in different times. If catechesis were given the place and importance
assigned in pastoral practice by recent church documents and if education were imagined to
be something more and different from inculturing socialization, the relationship between
those two values are being shaped in a way different from the one they would have if
catechesis were reduced to doctrinal teaching and education to mere »reproducing«
socialization in service of some ideology. What is important for a religious moral is its more
formative but less informative aspect. Education for values is in the focus of religious
education. That aspect, as a common denominator, should include all educational principles,
for the aim of education is to develop adult, mature, responsible, whole person. A religious
mora...l wants to contribute to the growing process of personality in a proper and mature
attitude to oneself, fellow creatures, and external world, and, to that which is specific for
religion, to a supra-world. The author concludes that it is difficult to be whole without the
aspects of relationship that make one a whole personality. Isn’t school in its essence in that
service?
