Re-examination of obstacles and potential outcomes of pluralism in education, as a conceptual
framework for developing individuality, autonomy and diversity should provide basic
components for planning changes in education. The author identifies a number of key social
processes and psychological factors necessary for creating educational strategies and
curriculum. Thus, an old question is raised but in a new context: How can education mediate
between society and an individual? Recognition of individual freedoms and individuality,
therefore diversity, that liberal concept of democracy is based upon suggests that this principle
be built in the foundation of educational system. Could pluralist model of education meet the
demand? To what extent can cultivating of democratic values, values of pluralism, provide
recognition of diversity in the process of globalization? What is the range of multicultural
programs from the aspect of contemporary society’s needs, on one hand, and psyc...hological
findings on democratic and antidemocratic personality predispositions, on the other hand?
Those are some of the issues discussed. It is concluded that resolutions to multicultural
dilemmas should involve relevant social facts, however, advantage should be given to findings
on the psychology of democracy and anti-democracy.
