Abstract
Children today are different, born into a world vastly different from the world that existed even ten years ago. Due to rapid changes, we, as educators, can no longer focus on testing or developing knowledge and isolated skills. We must teach children how to think through issues and solve complex problems. Educators must provide children with choices and join with them in creating solutions to the complex problems faced by the increasingly interdependent nations of the world. In this paper, I will share my experiences using DISCOVER, a unique model for assessing and developing problem solving abilities by recognizing the diversity of gifts and talents in peoples of all cultures, languages, nations, ages, and environments. The results of over ten-year research will support the message about the changes we need to make in our educational systems. Diversity includes many aspects of the individual and the society: varied languages, perspectives and experiences, different cultures... and values, and perhaps most importantly, individual differences in abilities, talents, gifts, and motivations. By recognizing, respecting, honoring, and developing this diversity, we have greater potential as a society and as individuals, thereby increased possibility that we will reach workable and innovative solutions.
