Encouraging critical thinking in teaching: Atttitudes and perceptins of students

Abstract
In the paper, we have shown the results of the research, which represent a part of the wider research about creativity initiation, cooperation and students’ initiative. There were 856 eighth grade students from primary schools of Serbia interviewed for the purpose of this research. The sample of schools was representative. The aim of this part of the research was to examine the attitudes of students about critical thinking and their perception about teachers’ activities during classes, directed towards critical thinking in teaching. Students’ attitudes and perceptions were connected to school achievement and educational level of the parents. We wanted to examine whether students’ perceptions of teachers’ activities can be predicted based on the attitudes of students towards stimulating critical thinking. Based on the previously done factor analysis, we have shown in this paper data about the presence of certain factors in the whole sample of interviewees. Results show that attitudes an...d perception of students are not connected with school achievements. Given data shoe that there are certain differences in students’ attitudes and perceptions in relation to the educational level of their parents. According to the results of regression analyses, each of six factors of students perceptions of teachers’ activities in the class can be predicted according to two or three factors of students’ attitudes. It has been determined that it is significant when mastering teaching process in the domain of encouraging critical thinking is significant when including students’ considerations about the work of teachers.
U radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja koje je deo obimnijeg istraživanja o podsticanju stvaralaštva, saradnje i inicijative kod učenika. Upitnikom sastavljenim za potrebe tog istraživanja ispitano je 856 učenika osmog razreda osnovnih škola iz Srbije. Obuhvaćen je reprezentativan uzorak škola. Cilj ovog dela istraživanja je da se ispitaju odnosi stavova učenika o podsticanju kritičkog mišljenja i njihovih percepcija aktivnosti nastavnika na času, usmerenih ka podsticanju kritičkog mišljenja u nastavi. Učeničke stavove i percepcije doveli smo u vezu sa školskim uspehom učenika i nivoom obrazovanja njihovih roditelja. Takođe, želeli smo da ispitamo da li se učeničke percepcije aktivnosti nastavnika mogu predvideti na osnovu stavo- va učenika prema podsticanju kritičkog mišljenja. Na osnovu prethodno izvršenih faktorskih analiza, u ovom radu su prikazani podaci o zastupljenosti pojedinih faktora na ukupnom uzorku ispitanika. Rezultati pokazuju da stavovi i percepcije učenika nisu pov...ezani sa školskim uspehom. Dobijeni podaci ukazuju da postoje razlike u učeničkim stavovima i percepcijama u odnosu na nivo obrazovanja njihovih roditelja. Prema rezultatima regresionih analiza, svaki od šest faktora učeničkih percepcija aktivnosti nastavnika na času može se predvideti na osnovu dva ili tri faktora učeničkih stavova. Potvrđeno je da je za usavršavanje nastavnog procesa u domenu podsticanja kritičkog mišljenja važno uzeti u obzir mišljenja učenika o radu nastavnika.
