Abstract
The work deals with the education of the children and the young people of high abilities in Japan. In order to be understood better, the author first presents some basic information on the philosophical background of Japanese education, the history of the education system and the current rules in the work in educational institutions of varied levels. The most important part of the article is devoted to the conception of giftedness, talents and creativity, school regulations dealing with encouraging the abilities, talent and creativity of pupils and students and the existing educational support to them in schools and at universities. Plans on the future development of education in Japan are based upon the idea that the individual is free to choose the possibilities for learning and to use them. The most recent changes of school, from the present highly selective environment in which the success is the result of competition are directed towards creating an environment in which the pupils... individuality and personality will be respected more fully. The reforms carried out introduce some measures which promise a better treatment and a more favourable position of the highly capable, interested and talented in the Japanese schools.
