AB - Poštovani i dragi nastavnici, stručni saradnici i direktori škola,
i pomognete nam u našim istraživačkim aktivnostima.
života i širu zajednicu.
i oslonac svojim učenicima u prevazilaženju traumatskih iskustava. Pritom, lako

AB - Corporal punishment (CP) is a widely spread disciplining practice among parents and caregivers globally. Our paper aimed to explore the relationship between the parental attitudes towards CP, expected outcomes of CP, and parenting practices on one hand, with the reported dysfunctions of their children, on the other. Additionally, we aimed to explore the relationship between the use of CP and the reported academic, developmental, and psychological–emotional dysfunctions of their children. The present study involved a nationally representative sample of 1186 parents in Serbia, who had at least one child aged 0–18 years at the moment of interviewing. The parents filled out a series of questionnaires on their attitudes towards CP, expectations of CP outcomes, and their parental practices. Findings indicate that parents that report having a child with dysfunctions have positive attitudes towards CP and expect positive outcomes of CP. These parents also report using more CP as a disciplining method, as well as other harsh disciplining practices. We also identified parental positive expectations of CP, use of physical assault, psychological aggression, neglect as significant predictors of reported child dysfunctions severity. Having all the results in mind, we can assume that children with health-related and school-related issues might be at potential risk of further maltreatment.

AB - Objective The aim of this study was to explore how changes in biologically based narratives versus socially focused ones affect
medical students’ perceptions of causes, treatment strategies, and social distance towards patients and their beliefs that patients
can improve.
Methods The sample consisted of 1652 medical students of 18 to 32 years of age from the Faculty ofMedicine at the University
of Belgrade. Three text passages describing a female with standard symptoms of depression were randomly assigned. Within the
text, additional information about different circumstances was included: information about personal problems (group S), family
mental disorder history (group B), or both (group BS).
Results Although family history of mental illness does not necessarily imply heredity, group B assumed a biological cause of
depression to be more probable and identified medication prescription as a more effective treatment approach than the other
groups did. Changes in views towards treatment strategies from the first year to later years were observed with the medical model
becoming more dominant.
Conclusions The results of this study warn us of a tendency towards thinking less about social causes and more about medication
prescription when an indication of biological causes is present. Implications for the medical education of future doctors and
clinical practitioners are discussed.

AB - Although NSSI has been drawing the attention of researchers intensely for the last 30 years, to date there is no published study about rates of NSSI behaviors in countries of south-eastern Europe. The study aimed to explore NSSI in the Republic of Serbia. Data were collected using multistage random sampling. The final sample consisted of 2792 participants (57.4% female) while the NSSI subsample consisted of 405 participants (54.3% males). Results showed the NSSI rate in Serbia is 4.3% based on a percentage of people who answered affirmatively to lifetime NSSI engagement. However, when the percentage of people who reported at least one positive answer through the NSSI behaviors checklist, the rate rises to 14.5%. The most frequent NSSI behavior is wound picking. NSSI rate drops to 8.8% when wound picking is excluded. Those engaged in NSSI were more likely to report suicide attempts and seek professional help than those who did not report NSSI. Gender differences in NSSI frequency are found only in cases of headbanging and burning oneself. This study showed the scope of NSSI-related problems is similar in Serbia compared to other countries. It also raised questions about the lack of preventive programs and treatment strategies for dealing with NSSI in Serbia.

AB - The present study is couched within Rachman’s three-pathway theory of fear acquisition (Rachman 1977, 1991). Besides the direct contact with the objects of fear, this model also includes two indirect pathways to fear acquisition: negative information transmission and modelling. The study aims to explore the contribution of these three factors to the level of children’s fear of COVID-19. The sample consisted of 376 children (59.6% girls), aged 7 to 19 (Mage = 12.77 SDage = 3.57), and one of their parents (Mage = 42.88, SDage = 6.00). The survey was conducted online during the COVID-19 national state of emergency in the Republic of Serbia. The children assessed their fear of COVID-19, general fearfulness, negative information transmission and modelling by their parents, as well as the level of exposure to negative information outside their home. The parents assessed their own fear of COVID-19 and trait anxiety. Parents’ anxiety, children’s age, and children’s general fearfulness were used as covariates. The results of our path analysis provide support for Rachman’s notion of indirect pathways. The more the parents were afraid of COVID-19, the more they expressed this (either verbally or through their behaviour), which in turn led to an increase in the children’s fear of COVID-19. Furthermore, children’s exposure to negative information related to COVID-19, provided by their teachers and peers or stemming from the media, directly contributed to the level of children’s fear. The results of the study emphasize the importance of caregivers’ behaviour during global health crises and provide some clues as to what caregivers may do to protect their children’s mental health in such circumstances.

AB - Lying emerges early during preschool age. The focus of previous research has been mainly related to the ability to lie in preschool children. In this research, which uses a new procedure to lie, the aim was to examine the ability to make a false statement in school-age children, as well as the cognitive and social correlates of children's success in making a fabricated narrative. A total of 48 children, 16 children in each studied grade of elementary school (first, fifth and eighth), had the task to construct false autobiographic narratives and report them as convincingly as possible in order to convince others that it really happened to them. The persuasiveness of their video-recorded narratives was assessed by 15 independent observers. Using a specially constructed inventory, assessments of the intelligence, verbal ability, peer group popularity, and antisocial behavior of each child were collected from the class teachers. The results show that children aged 10 to 11 years and children aged 13 to 14 years were assessed as more convincing compared to younger children aged 6 to 7 years. However, there was no difference in the ability to make a fabricated narrative between children aged 10 to 11 and children aged 13 to 14, nor a difference in this ability between girls and boys. Children with higher school achievement and those who were assessed by the class teacher as more intelligent, verbally capable, and more popular among peers were also assessed as more convincing by the group of independent assessors while reporting false autobiographic narratives.

AB - The aim of our study was to explore relations between parents’ and children’s fear of
COVID–19, parents’ dispositions (emotion regulation, self-efficacy, the anxiety trait) and
their distress (due to the pandemic, the national state of emergency [NSE] and curfews) and
how these variables have been affecting the quality of parental pandemic practices during
the COVID–19 NSE in Serbia. Our online questionnaire was filled in by 376 parents and
one of their children aged 7 to 19 years. Path analysis was used to analyze data. Higher
levels of cognitive reappraisal and self-efficacy directly contribute to a higher quality of
parental pandemic practices during NSE. Indirectly, parents’ fear, pandemic distress, and
parents’ cognitive anxiety symptoms increase children’s fear, consequently raising the quality
of parental pandemic practices. Pointing out protective and risk factors that may affect
pandemic parenting during NSE as well as mechanisms of their contributions, our findings
draw attention to the importance of parents’ negative emotions regulation and the effects of
children’s emotions on the quality of parental pandemic practices during an ongoing pandemic.

čitalačke pismenosti najviša: Slovačka (r = ,57), Bugarska (r = ,52) i Mađarska (r = ,52). Uzorak je činilo
14355 učenika četvrtog razreda osnovne škole, oba pola (50,8% dečaka). Podrška koju učenik ima kod
kuće operacionalizovana je preko opremljenosti domaćinstva (npr. broj knjiga i broj knjiga za decu)
i obrazovno-karijernih karakteristika roditelja (najviši nivo obrazovanja i radna pozicija). Motivacija
AB - Social reproduction theorists tend to acknowledge that family factors, beside the influence on
students’ educational achievement, also define the attitude towards education in general. Additionally,
numerous pedagogists share a widespread idea that students’ motivation directly contributes to their
educational achievement. Taking into consideration two aforementioned theoretical perspectives,
the aim of our investigation is to examine whether the connection between the support for learning
which student receives at home and educational achievement is mediated by the student’s motivation.
In order to answer this question, we used data gathered in more than 50 countries which participated
in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study ‒ PIRLS 2016. Among all the countries which
participated in this survey, our examination looks into the three countries with the highest correlation
between home support for learning and achievement on the reading literacy test: Slovakia (r = .57),
Bulgaria (r = .52) and Hungary (r = .52). The sample consists of 14355 four-grade elementary school
students of both genders (50.8% male). The support the student has at home is operationalized by
the household resources (for example number of books and children books households possess)
and parents’ educational and occupational features (the highest level of education and job position).
Motivation for reading is measured using the students’ answers to 10 questions related to their
attitude toward reading classes and free-time reading. For the data analysis, macro PROCESS for SPSS
is used. Results indicate that home support for learning directly positively predicts the achievement
(b = 22.52, p < .01), but it also predicts it indirectly via motivation (b = 0.47, 95% CI [0.37, 0.58]). As
the home support realises only a small part of its effect on the achievement via motivation (2.1%),
forthcoming research should examine additional potential mediators of this relation, not just in
terms of reading literacy but also in terms of other abilities, so as to explain in a more detail the
mechanisms through which the support that students receive within the family system contributes
to development of their various abilities.

vanredno stanje, uključujući i ograničenje kretanja građana tokom velikog dela dana (takozvani „policijski čas“).
Mnogi od gorenavedenih aspekata psiholoških istraživanja – okupljanje većeg broja ispitanika u jednoj prostoriji,
odlazak ispitivača u različite krajeve zemlje i ulaženje u brojna domaćinstva, razgovor u fokus-grupama – time
psihološka istraživanja u uslovima ograničenih fizičkih kontakata i kretanja? Da li je i kako moguće doći do
ispitanika?
zdravlje i psihičko funkcionisanje uopšte?

507 učenika beogradskih srednjih škola uzrasta od 15 do 19 godina oba pola (AS= 16,69, SD= 1,119).
Podaci o eksternalizovanim problemima prikupljani su putem Ahenbahovog sistema empirijski
zasnovane procene (ASEBA), verzija za mlade (YSR/11–18), a о afektivnom vezivanju za roditelje
putem Inventara afektivnog vezivanja za roditelje i vršnjake (IPPA). Dimenzije afektivnog vezivanja za
majku i oca objašnjavaju ukupno 24,9% varijanse Ponašanja kojima se krše pravila (F(6,500)=27,67,
p<0,001) i 17% varijanse Agresivnog ponašanja (F(6,500)=17,10, p<0,001).
AB - Parental attachment is one of the family factors most frequently associated with externalising
problems. Although attachment is established at an early age, there are specific changes in quality
of parental attachment in adolescence, especially in the context of externalising problems. The aim
of the study is to determine the nature of relationship between the dimensions of attachment to
mother and father (Trust, Communication, Alienation) and externalising problems syndromes
(Aggressive Behaviour and Rule-breaking Behaviour). Sample of 507 Belgrade high school students
of both genders aged from fifteen to eighteen (AS = 16.69, SD = 1.119) were administered selfreport
measures. For the assessment of externalising problems, a part of the Achenbach System of
Empirically Based Assessment – ASEBA, Youth Self-Report – (YSR/11-18) was used. The Inventory
of Parents and Peer Attachment, (IPPA) was used to collect data about parental attachment. The
dimensions of attachment to mother and father explain for a total of 24.9% of the variance in Rulebreaking
behaviour and 17% of the variance in Aggressive Behaviour. The only significant predictor
of Aggressive Behaviour is Maternal Alienation (β = .204), whereas Trust in the Father (β = .- 321),
Maternal Alienation (β = .161), and Trust in the Mother (β = .-149) predict Rule-breaking Behaviour. As
assumed, attachment to both parents is important for the psycho-social wellbeing of Belgrade high
school students, with spotted differences in the mothers’ and fathers’ roles with regard to externalising
problems. Recommendations for enhancing parental attachment and the most effective programs
for prevention of externalising problems are provided.

507 učenika beogradskih srednjih škola uzrasta od 15 do 19 godina oba pola (AS= 16,69, SD= 1,119).
Podaci o eksternalizovanim problemima prikupljani su putem Ahenbahovog sistema empirijski
zasnovane procene (ASEBA), verzija za mlade (YSR/11–18), a о afektivnom vezivanju za roditelje
putem Inventara afektivnog vezivanja za roditelje i vršnjake (IPPA). Dimenzije afektivnog vezivanja za
majku i oca objašnjavaju ukupno 24,9% varijanse Ponašanja kojima se krše pravila (F(6,500)=27,67,
p<0,001) i 17% varijanse Agresivnog ponašanja (F(6,500)=17,10, p<0,001).
programa za prevenciju eksternalizovanih problema., Parental attachment is one of the family factors most frequently associated with externalising
problems. Although attachment is established at an early age, there are specific changes in quality
of parental attachment in adolescence, especially in the context of externalising problems. The aim

AB - Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is defined as behavior that is self-directed and deliberate,
resulting in injury or potential injury to oneself without suicidal intent, although it consistently
correlates with suicidality. Common forms of NSSI include cutting, burning, scratching,
banging, hitting, biting etc. Meta-analysis showed that overall childhood maltreatment is
associated with NSSI, especially in the case of childhood emotional neglect or emotional abuse.
Highly lethal self-harm was associated with childhood physical peer victimization, sexual
abuse, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect. The NSSI questionnaire designed for this study
was based on several questionnaires such as Deliberate Self-Harm Inventory (DSHI), Inventory
of Statements About Self-Injury (ISAS), Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (OSI) and Self-Harm
Behaviour Questionnaire (SHBQ). The NSSI used in this survey contains 12 items with joint
binary (yes or no) and numeric (how many times) scales. On all items, respondents provided
answers with respect to two time periods: before and after the age of 18 (laws in Serbia restrict
rights of persons under the age of 18 and some of those are related to potentially risky behaviors
such as rights regarding alcohol purchase). Overall, approximately 4% of respondents reported
NSSI at least once in lifetime, out of which 3.6% reported NSSI at least once before the age of 18 and 1.8% at least once after the age of 18. Since this is a form of behaviour is typical for
younger adolescents, as expected, the NSSI is more prevalent before the age of 18 (2 = 17.225,
p < .01). The correlation between the frequency of NSSI before and after the age of 18 is
r = 0.73 (p < .01), while the correlation between suicide attempts and NSSI was Φ = 0.25
(p < .01). When it comes to the prediction of NSSI that occurred after the age of 18, ACE scores
were not significant predictors. However, regression analysis showed about 9% of the variance
of the NSSI before the age of 18 can be related to ACEs. Specifically, three types of ACEs
were significant predictors of NSSI: sexual abuse (β = 0.16, p < .01), incarceration of a family
member (β = 0.11, p = 0.051) and abuse of father by the partner (β = 0.15, p = 0.012). Available
data suggest that at least one part of the variance can be ascribed to the ACEs. Therefore,
emphasis should be put on fostering coping strategies in adolescents that would lead to
diminishing negative consequences of ACEs.

AB - This is an introductory abstract for other papers within this symposium, which are all part of
the same study, Research on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) in Serbia. ACE is a
traumatic experience in one’s life occurring before the age of 18 that the person remembers as
an adult. The purpose of this survey was to explore the prevalence of ACEs and their correlates
on a sample of 18-65 years old in Serbia. We used multistage random sampling, with a stratified
cluster sample in the first (187 settlements were sampled from 4 regions), and random sample
in the second stage (a random-walk technique for sampling participants). The final sample
consisted of 2792 respondents (57.4% females), interviewed face-to-face. Instrument package
included: ACE International Questionnaire, Health Appraisal, Family Health History, Trauma
Symptom Checklist, Benevolent Childhood experience, Experiences in Close Relationships-
Revised, HEXACO, DELTA9, and Non-suicidal self-injury. Each ACE was represented by a
binary score, in two ways: (1) any ACE score implies that participant had a specific event at
least “once or twice”; (2) frequent ACE implies that participant had specific events “many
times”. Factor analysis, principal axis with varimax rotation extracted three dimensions:
violence (involvement in physical fight, bullying, community violence, physical abuse,
collective violence, psychological abuse), neglect (depression in family, suicide in family,
psychological neglect, sexual abuse and parental separation) and abuse (alcoholism in family,
abuse of mother or father by the partner, incarceration of family member, drug abuse in family
and physical neglect). If we use ACEs as predictors of various life events in multiple regression
analysis, the highest prediction is gained for a number of suicidal attempts (R2 = .53, F = 2.38;
df = 17, 36; p < 0.05) - more ACEs lead to more attempts, with psychological neglect as
strongest predictor. Most frequent ACEs in Serbia are community violence (any 69.4%;
frequent 37.7%), psychological abuse (any 43.7%; frequent 26.3%), and involvement in a
physical fight (any 37.7%; frequent 19.7%). For comparison, physical abuse and domestic
violence appeared more frequently in Serbia than in Wales study, while parent separation and
sexual abuse appeared a bit more frequently in Wales sample. Possible higher prevalence of This is an introductory abstract for other papers within this symposium, which are all part of

AB - HEXACO personality framework represents one of the most prominent models of human personality traits. Despite of this, there are no empirical studies that estimate the fitness outcomes of HEXACO traits, although this topic represents a basic foundation for the study of the contemporary evolution of personality. In the present research we explored the relations between HEXACO personality traits, and three fitness indicators: the number of children, the number of grandchildren and the age at first birth. Participants were selected from the community population of individuals in a post-reproductive stage (N = 255; Mage = 64.9 years). Results from the regression analyses showed that the number of children was associated with lower scores on Honesty and Openness and higher scores on Emotionality; Agreeableness was positively associated with this criterion but only in males. The number of grandchildren was predicted by low Openness and marginally by high Conscientiousness, while Honesty had positive zero-order correlation with the criterion measure. Individuals with higher Extraversion tended to reproduce earlier in their lifetime. Findings contribute to the empirical data which suggest that personality is related to biological fitness in contemporary human populations: this means that personality is likely under natural selection and hence, it continues to evolve.

AB - Research about children’s lie-telling mainly include the so-called “temptation resistance
paradigm”. However, this procedure implicits only short, simple answers that do not require
in-depth elaboration of lies. Aim of this study was to enforce a new procedure for measuring
children’s ability to lie and investigate gender and school achivement differences in
children’s lie telling. New procedure is designed to measure the degree of ability to lie, based
on a person’s persuasiveness while telling a story of false autobiographical events. The
fulfillment of this task requires the ability to construct detailed, coherent and plausible
content of the story in a short period of time and the ability to present this content as
convincing in order to persuade others that the event really took place.
