Teachers' perceptions of factors impeding school improvement in Serbia

AB  - In the last ten years the education system in Serbia has undergone a series of innovations which have encountered various obstacles. Teachers, as the key actors in the implementation of innovations, have implicit perceptions which may impact on the success of any school improvement. Therefore this study employed a mixed methods research strategy to investigate what teachers see as the obstacles to school improvement. A qualitative study implied four focus groups with teachers, while quantitative data was gathered through a questionnaire completed by 1,441 teachers from 40 primary schools from different regions around Serbia. Factor analysis confirmed that the potential obstacles could be grouped into six factors (Teachers' incompetence, Material and organizational barriers, Lack of systemic support, Student related barriers, Lack of communication within the school, Lack of communication between schools and stakeholders). Teachers see the biggest obstacles to school improvement in student related and material and organizational barriers. Teachers do not see themselves as the most significant source of problems in improving the work of schools, but transfer responsibility onto more general issues and external agents.

Academic gender stereotypes of pre-service teachers

AB  - This research was aimed at studying the content of academic gender stereotypes of pre-service teachers who are being prepared for working in different cycles of education. The sample included 408 students of teaching programmes of the Teacher Training College, Faculty of Mathematics and Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. It has been established that future class and subject teachers have gender stereotypes about the interests and achievements of students in different school subjects. pre-service teachers from both groups are of the opinion that girls get interested more easily than boys in the majority of school subjects, as well as that girls are more talented for the subjects in the field of humanities and languages, while boys are more talented for the subjects in the field of sciences. Pre-service teachers estimate that boys typically have a low achievement in languages, arts and music, while girls have a low achievement in physics, computer science, technical sciences and physical education. Since teachers' gender stereotypes can affect students' achievement, educational and career choices, it is important to raise awareness about the content and consequences of such beliefs in teachers and focus on certain actions towards their altering.
AB  - Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se ispita sadržaj akademskih rodnih stereotipa budućih nastavnika koji se pripremaju za rad u različitim ciklusima osnovnog obrazovanja. Uzorak je činilo 408 studenata nastavničkih smerova Učiteljskog, Matematičkog i Filološkog fakulteta u Beogradu. Utvrđeno je da budući nastavnici razredne i predmetne nastave poseduju rodne stereotipe o interesovanjima i postignuću učenika u okviru različitih školskih predmeta. Budući nastavnici iz obe grupe smatraju da je lakše zainteresovati za većinu školskih predmeta devojčice nego dečake, kao i da su devojčice talentovanije za društveno-jezičke predmete, dok su dečaci talentovaniji za školske predmete iz prirodno-matematičke grupe. Kao tipično neuspešne u oblasti jezika, likovne i muzičke kulture budući nastavnici vide dečake, dok se neuspeh devojčica vezuje za nastavu fizike, informatike, tehničkog obrazovanja i fizičkog vaspitanja. Budući da rodni stereotipi nastavnika mogu da utiču na postignuće učenika, obrazovne i karijerne izbore, već tokom inicijalnog obrazovanja važno je kod budućih nastavnika probuditi svest o sadržaju i posledicama ovih uverenja i usmeriti određene akcije ka njihovom menjanju.

The issue of migration according to adolescents and their parents' perceptions of their future

AB  - A migration in general, but particularly involving young, highly educated people intensified in the 1990s in Serbia and continues to do so. One of the important consequences of this trend is the creation of an atmosphere which encourages young people to consider/plan to leave their homeland. The work is based on a study which included 205 parents and 204 of their children -adolescents (16-17 years of age). The aim of the study was to analyse the orientation towards emigration envisioned in the perceptions of adolescent's possible future according to the predictions made by adolescents and their parents. To obtain the data a questionnaire was created (applyed as adolesccents form and parents form) which contained general information about the candidates and on open-type question: "What kind of life will you/your child have in ten years' time?". The results of the first part of the analysis show that the topic of migration according to adolescents and parents is elaborated in three ways: (1) will live abroad in the future (26% adolescents and 11.22% parents); (2) will live in their homeland (14.70% adolescents and 29.27% parents); (3) without declaration about the question of migration (59.32% adolescents and 59.51% parents). The second part of the analysis includes the naratives of adolescents and parents who considered emigration. Through inductive analysis of the contents five thematic patterns were extracted: (a) departure abroad without any particular aim (30.19% adolescents and 26.09% parents); (b) departure abroad as an opportunity to have a normal and quality life (26.40% adolescents and 30.43% parents (c) departure abroad as an alternative if things do not improve (16.97% adolescents); (d) departure abroad as an opportunity to progress professionally (7.57% adolescents and 39.13% parents); (e) departure abroad to realise their dreams (18.87% adolescents and 4.35% parents). At the end the results are discussed in the context of the support and advancement of youth and education policies, as well as the development of a preventative programmes.

New approaches to cooperation with parents through the perspective of class and subject teachers

AB  - The paper presents a new conceptual framework of mutual cooperation between teachers and parents based on connecting the adults in the function of the development of intrinsic orientation of children/students towards learning and knowledge acquisition. Empirical verification of the new approach was performed on the sample of 1441 teachers (43,2% class teachers and 56,8% subject teachers) from 40 primary schools in Serbia. The aim of the research was to test the grounding of the conceptual framework through positioning of class and subject teachers in the relation to the new determinants of cooperation. For the purpose of this research we created a questionnaire with close-ended questions related to certain thematic aspects of cooperation with parents and the same aspects of teachers' work with students. In data processing we used a set of parametric and nonparametric statistical procedures. The results revealed that some what less than half of teachers assess positively the importance of the existing forms of cooperation with parents, slightly more than one quarter do not see how cooperation can contribute to the enhancement of their work, while one quarter are indecisive. In the opinion of both groups of teachers the problems related to learning and encouragement of students' independence were more prominent topics when talking to parents than in work with students, while the issues of interests, abilities, talents and planning goals were more present in subject teachers' work with students than in talking to parents. The correlation between teacher's interaction with parents in the aforementioned conceptual framework and teacher's pedagogical practice in work with students is higher in class teachers than in subject teachers. The obtained findings have confirmed the potential of the established framework for the enhancement of the practice of cooperation, which serves as the foundation for suggesting implications for practice provided in the concluding part of the paper.
AB  - U radu smo predstavili novi konceptualni okvir saradnje nastavnika i roditelja baziran na povezivanju odraslih u funkciji razvijanja intrinzičke orijentacije dece/učenika prema učenju i sticanju znanja. Empirijska provera novog pristupa realizovana je na uzorku od 1441 nastavnika (43,2% nastavnika razredne i 56,8% nastavnika predmetne nastave) iz 40 osnovnih škola u Srbiji. Cilj istraživanja bio je da se proveri utemeljenost koncepcijskog okvira kroz pozicioniranje nastavnika razredne i predmetne nastave u odnosu na nove odrednice saradnje. Za potrebe istraživanja kreiran je upitnik sa pitanjima zatvorenog tipa koja su se odnosila na određene tematske aspekte saradnje sa roditeljima i iste te aspekte nastavnikovog rada sa učenicima. U obradi podataka korišćen je set parametrijskih i neparametrijskih statističkih tehnika. Pozitivno viđenje značaja postojećih oblika saradnje sa roditeljima ima nešto manje od polovine nastavnika, nešto više od četvrtine ne vidi doprinos saradnje unapređivanju svog rada, dok je četvrtina neodlučna. U procenama obe grupe nastavnika problemi u vezi sa učenjem i podsticanjem samostalnosti učenika su istaknutije teme u razgovoru sa roditeljima nego u radu sa učenicima, dok su pitanja interesovanja, sposobnosti, talenata i planiranja ciljeva teme prisutnije u radu predmetnih nastavnika sa učenicima, nego u razgovoru sa roditeljima. Rezultati ukazuju da je povezanost nastavnikove interakcije sa roditeljima u naznačenom konceptualnom okviru i nastavnikove pedagoške prakse u radu sa učenicima veća kod nastavnika razredne, nego kod nastavnika predmetne nastave. Dobijeni nalazi potvrđuju potencijal postavljenog okvira za unapređivanje prakse saradnje na čemu su zasnovane i implikacije za praksu predočene na kraju rada.

Primjena i validacija testa implicitnih asocijacija u mjerenju implicitnih predrasuda kod djece

AB  - U ovom radu opisana je primjena i ispitane su metrijske karakteristike modificiranog Testa implicitnih asocijacija (Child IAT) u mjerenju implicitnih etničkih predrasuda prema Romima kod desetogodišnjaka. Na uzorku od osamdesetero djece iz tri
beogradske škole primijenjeni su Child IAT, skala socijalne distance prema Romima
i skala Privlačnosti. Analizom interne konzistentnosti utvrđena je pouzdanost, dok je
valjanost testa ispitana korelacijom IAT-D mjere i rezultata na skali socijalne distance i skali Privlačnosti. Pouzdanost Child IAT-a (α = 0,73) nalazi se u okviru raspona
pouzdanosti IAT-a za odrasle. Korelacije IAT-D mjere sa skalom socijalne distance
(r = 0,252) i skalom Privlačnosti (r = 0,263) odgovaraju korelacijama implicitnih i
eksplicitnih mjera etničkih stavova utvrđenim u prethodnim istraživanjima. Metrijske
karakteristike Child IAT-a nalaze se u opsezima koje su utvrđene na uzorcima odraslih
ispitanika, pa se primjena ovog testa preporučuje kao korisna metodološka dopuna u
ispitivanju etničkih predrasuda kod djece.
